Essex-class aircraft carrier, USS Oriskany become the first warship to be sunken and transformed into an artificial reef and diving site in 2004 after nearly 30 years of immobilisation. The aircraft carrier was decommissioned in 1976 and laid on long-term storage, possibly for future reactivation but it was struck off the Naval Vessel register when it was deemed as being obsolete. It was detonated and settled in 210 feet (65m) of water in the Gulf of Mexico. Oriskany received 2 and 5 battle stars for the Korean and Vietam war services respectively.
